Cardiac rehabilitation assists a person in improving strength, endurance

nutrition, education, stress management and electronically monitored exercise.
Massage therapy is one of the
oldest forms of therapy. Massage works on the soft tissue (muscles, tendons, and
ligaments) to improve muscle tone. Although it largely affects those muscles just
under the skin, its benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle and even
the organs themselves.
Occupational therapy assists a person in promoting independence in daily
activities, increasing strength and motion in the arm, and relieving pain
and preventing disabilities or deformities through the use of positioning
devices and techniques. Daily activities include: self-care activities
such as grooming, hygiene, eating, dressing and transferring; work activities
such as simplification techniques and time management, and leisure activities
such as games, sports, hobbies, and social activities. Treatment may include
use of adaptive equipment and techniques, heat, cold, therapeutic exercise,
joint and soft tissue mobilization and fabrication of splints and braces.
Physical therapy assists a person in restoring motion, relieving pain, strengthening
and retraining muscles, preventing the onset and progression of functional limitations
and promoting healthy living through exercise. Physical therapists practice in a broad
range of inpatient, outpatient and community based settings including, hospitals,
schools, industrial and occupational environments and athletics. With an emphasis in
education, treatment may include therapeutic exercise, manual techniques, massage,
relaxation techniques, body mechanics and ergonomics training, adaptive equipment and
the use of modalities (heat, cold, electrical stimulation, ultra-sound, whirlpool).
Respiratory therapists evaluate, treat and care for patients with breathing or
other cardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory therapists perform cardiopulmonary
diagnostic tests, administer medications, assure lung inflation and airway hygiene,
and monitor cardiopulmonary physiology. Respiratory therapists develop an
individualized plan of care, tailored to each patient’s needs.
Speech pathologists specialize in evaluating and treating people of all ages with
communication problems. They look at how individuals produce speech, how they
understand language and how they express themselves. They teach patients how to
make sounds, improve their voices, or increase their oral or written language skills
to communicate more effectively. They also teach individuals how to strengthen
muscles or use compensatory strategies to swallow without choking or inhaling food
or liquid.
